The despot ruler exerts complete subjugation over his populace with the help of the "dasdaran," black-clad, scythe-bearing warriors who sweep across the country on horseback, establishing a reign of terror. A hero (Zabih Afshar) rises from the populace, but proves himself more of an idiot than the muscle-bound deliverer that one might envision. Bald, slovenly, and overweight, he seems to exist only to fill his gut, and stumbles through life eliciting comic mayhem wherever he goes. Eventually, he pairs up with an intelligent woman (Leila Mousavi), who can barely stand him, and the two work together to deliver the country from its oppressors. Village after village, they awaken the (literally) sleeping populace and get them to rally against the sickle bearers. Equal part Mad Max and Buñuel, this film will have you laughi! ng out loud and give you plenty to talk about for long after the end credits roll.About the Presenting Organizations:3rd I New York's monthly film and music salon designed by local filmmakers and experimental djs showcases the works of independent filmmakers of South Asian descent and local djs, musicians and electronica artists. Born to Greekparents, native to Constantinople, Cavafy is now revered as one ofthe most innovative and internationally influential Greek writers ofthe twentieth century, and one of the world’s greatest poets. E. M.Forster called Cavafy “one of the greatest poets of our time” andthat he “has written some of the most powerful poems in history.” Cavafy, while cosmopolitan by birth, with family roots extendingfrom Constantinople to London (via Alexandria, Trebizond, Chios,Triste, Venice and Vienna), rarely left his native Alexandria, wherein fact he lived a rather unremarkable public life working for overthirty years as a civil servant. While working for the Ministry ofPublic works of Egypt, Cavafy preferred to circulate his poemsprivately on broadsheets and in pamphlets and withheld nearly a thirdof his work from the public eye. International recognition and famecame to Cavafy posthumously, establishing him as one of the greatmodernist poets. While Cavafy's work often draws on the ancient Greek poetictradition, his style is also often wickedly satirical, at timesintensely intimate and homoerotic, and always lyrically personal.Cavafy’s tender humanism, often punctuated with irony, along withhis unique, loose and idiomatic style established his internationaland timeless appeal, attested to by numerous translations.
A PLAY: Nine Parts of Desire. by Heath RAFFO. solo play told through Lives of nine radical Iraqi women

When: Thu, 05 Jun 2008 19:00:00 -0700
Hosted by: Alwan for the ARTS
City: New YORK City
Info: "God created sexual desire in ten parts; then he gave nine parts to women an one to men." Heather Raffo brings to life Iraqi women: artists, doctors, wives, exiles. Hear a society long silenced finally speak. "But I am good at being naked - it's what I do, in secret." Amir ElSaffar will open the show with Iraqi maqam on Santoor $10 ==================== Nine Parts of Desire began at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh. It later moved to the Bush Theatre in London where critics hailed it one of the five best plays in London. The central character is based on an Iraqi painter known for her daring use of the female nude, and for rumored affairs with men tied to Hussein's regime. The play was inspired by Raffo's trip to the Saddam Art Center in Baghdad in 1993 where she saw only billboard size portraits of Saddam Hussein. Then in a back room, she saw a painting of a nude woman clinging to a barren tree. There was a light in front of her, like a sun, but her head was hanging, bowed. Raffo took a photo of the painting, came back to America and has been digesting this painting and what it must mean to be an Iraqi woman now. "With elegance, composure and a raging sensuality, Raffo skirts around the danger zone laying bare the secret identities of an often closed order." - The Herald / UK "Raffo is a fine actress. The play raises a difficult question, what should the west have done about Iraq?" - Michael Billington, The Guardian / UK about the play http://www.curtainup.com/9partsofdesire.html Read more

RECEPTION: for Madelon Jones 2008: April 29, 2008 - May 24, 2008

When: Thu, 01 May 2008 17:00:00 -0700
Hosted by: Amos Eno Gallery
City: ChELSEA -->New York City
Info: Amos Eno Gallery is pleased to present new paintings by Madelon Jones. On view from April 29 to May 24th. 2008. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday May 1 from 5 PM to 7 PM. Madelon Jones work as an artist has always been about color, light, movement and texture. The paintings in this exhibition reflect her continuing interest in combining printmaking and painting techniques on paper. “Paper is a material I have loved since my beginnings as a printmaker,” says Jones, “Hand-made papers stand up best to the rigors of my painting techniques and are used in most of my paintings, mono-prints and mixed media pieces.” The works in this exhibition feature images that have been influenced by her exploration of encaustic painting. Although oil based ink and paint are used instead of wax the effect is rich in color and depth and abstract in nature. Jones attacks her surfaces using brushes, hand rollers, her fingers, hands, paper towels, and any other tool that will do the job at the moment, working and re-working the surface until she obtains the desired effect. Many of the resulting images have an ageless quality and call to mind the textures and colors of ancient cultures. Her work can be found in museums, private collections and corporate headquarters through out the world. Read more

When: Sun, 27 Apr 2008 07:04:00 -0700
Hosted by: TRIBECA Film FESTIVAL
City: New York City
Info: http://www.tribecafilmfestival.org/filmguide/War_Love_God__Madness.html ----------------------------- World Documentary Feature Competition[WLGMA] | 2008 | 72 min | Feature DocumentaryDirected by: Mohamed Al-DaradjiNorth American PremiereProducers: Isabelle Stead, Atia Al-Daradji, Rashid Masharawi, Dimitri deGerg After the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, Baghdad-born Mohamed Al-Daradji returned home in 2004 with the dream of making a film about his agonized homeland, now freed at last from the tyrant's grasp. Under increasingly difficult conditions, he succeeded in making a feature film, Ahlaam. It was screened at many film festivals throughout the world, received many awards, and represented Iraq in both the Golden Globe and Academy Award® competitions in 2006. The extraordinary story of how that film was made is the subject of War, Love, God & Madness (In Arabic the first three of those words are written with characters that closely resemble each other). But this riveting new documentary is quite different from the usual-and in the DVD age, obligatory-making-of feature, and indeed its story can be appreciated even by viewers who have not seen Ahlaam. It provides a harrowing and unforgettable portrayal of the extraordinary ordeals Al-Daradji and his indomitable colleagues were forced to endure, including interrogation and torture. Struggling against time, persecution, imprisonment, injuries, and terrorist attacks, the cast and crew struggle on and, miraculously, manage to finish the film. In Godard's Pierrot le fou, the American director Sam Fuller is famously quoted as saying, "Film is a battlefield." In the case of Ahlaam, this unnerving documentary indelibly records, that wasn't simply a figure of speech.Co-hosted by ArteEast.--Peter ScarletFilm Updates Read more

When: Thu, 11 Oct 2007 21:00:00 -0700
Hosted by: Cornelia Street Cafe
City: NYC - West Village
Info: The Claudia Quintet is one of the most innovative and promising groups to emerge in recent years from 'downtown' NY's new alt jazz scene. The group has released 3 CDs, “The Claudia Quintet” in 2002 followed by “I, Claudia” in 2004 and “Semi-Formal” which was released in October 2006. They have toured extensively, receiving widespread praise and generating a buzz among both jazz and post rock audiences in the US, Europe, Australia and beyond. Simultaneously accessible and intriguing, the Claudia Quintet's music can perhaps best be described as post jazz: combining propulsive grooves, sophisticated compositions and near telepathic improvisation. Read more

Her compelling, multi-facetted voice –whether in ballads or in lively songs– cannot fail to touch anyone who appreciates great vocal music. www.izalinecalister.com Read more
